Chocolate Doom Install, Notes, and Files

Chocolate Doom is a Source Port which means it is a new program that has been written to play the Doom game with modern computers. It does not run in DOS, it runs as its own program in Windows. There are many source ports for Doom, this is just one option. Chocolate Doom is meant to closely replicate the original Doom game as far as how it works and what it looks like, so this will be an experience similar to running original Doom. But it may be more reliable to run than the DosBOX versions, and it is somewhat simpler to set up and tweak. It also uses less CPU power to run the game.

Install Chocolate Doom quick instructions (requires doom.wad file such as from GOG or Steam purchase):

  1. Download the Chocolate Doom install file chocolate-doom-3.0.0-win32.zip at time of this writing. https://www.chocolate-doom.org/wiki/index.php/Downloads . Put it in the desired installation folder, such as c:\games\doom chocolate
  2. Extract the zip file into that installation folder. The zip file can optionally be deleted after unzipping.
  3. Copy the doom.wad file from your GOG or Steam Doom Ultimate installation into the doom chocolate folder.

Chocolate Doom can be run as-is installed, but these changes will improve it.

Launch the settings file chocolate-doom-setup.exe and make these changes. Or, you can take this file and copy it into the installation folder, overwriting the default default.cfg : default.cfg

There are many source ports for Doom, this is just one option. GZ Doom offers enhancements to the original Doom game such as better graphics and more control options. It may vary greatly from the original Doom game depending on settings, but it offers an enjoyable gaming experience while keeping the basics of the game play the same. Brutal Doom Install, Notes, and Files

Brutal Doom is a Doom mod that runs on a source port along with the original Doom.wad file. For this installation we will use the GZ Doom source port for the Brutal Doom mod. Brutal Doom offers a completely different Doom experience as the game has been extensively modified with all sorts of add-ons, weapons, and all manner of extended violence. Some argue that it is bad because it is not an authentic Doom experience. But it is an interesting change of pace if you re in the mood for something different. Why not play and enjoy both?

Install Brutal Doom quick instructions using GZ Doom. (requires doom.wad file such as from GOG or Steam purchase):

  1. Download the Brutal Doom file brutalv21.rar at time of this writing. https://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-doom/downloads . Put it in a temporary folder, such as c:\games\doom brutal install
  2. Extract the rar file into that folder. The rar file can optionally be deleted after unzipping.
  3. Install GZ Doom as described above if you have not already done so. Be sure to copy the doom.wad file into the GZ Doom folder as noted.
  4. NOTE: Because of the way Brutal Doom works, it is better to set up a separate GZ Doom install just for Brutal Doom, separate from all of the other Doom games you want to play in GZ Doom. This can be done by installating GZ Doom twice, or just copy the GZ Doom folder and rename it Doom Brutal, then proceed:
  5. Copy the brutalv21.pk3 file from the folder in step 1 into the Doom Brutal folder.
  6. From a file explorer if you drag the brutalv21.pk3 file on top of the gzdoom.exe file it will launch Doom with Doom Brutal enabled.
  7. Or for a direct-click method, make a .bat file using Notepad with these lines in it (adjust the path to match your location as necessary). Name it doom doom brutal.bat and put it into the GZ Doom folder. Here is a premade .bat file already made as shown below: doom brutal.bat

@echo off
start "" "c:\games\doom brutal\gzdoom.exe" -file brutalv21.pk3

When you launch GZ Doom with this batch file and play Doom you will be running Brutal Doom. You can start playing right away, or experiment with the many options in the Brutal Doom Options menu.

NOTE: Select Options, then Mouse Options, and turn Always Mouselook to On. This is required for Brutal Doom so you can aim your shots properly (up and down).

  4. Or for a direct-click method, make a .bat file using Notepad with these lines in it (adjust the path to match your location as necessary). Name it doom doom sigil.bat and put it into the GZ Doom folder. Here is a premade .bat file already made as shown below: doom sigil.bat

@echo off
